2014 Winter Olympics: 100-day Countdown
In 1952 the Olympic Winter Games were held in Stein Eriksen’s hometown of Olso, Norway, the birthplace of modern skiing. At the age of 24, Stein was the first alpine skier from outside the alps to earn a Gold Medal. Despite a near fall that would have resulted in disqualification, Stein won the gold in the men’s giant slalom by 1.9 seconds. Stein’s gold medal is on display in a hand-made trophy case at Stein Eriksen Lodge along with a bounty of other medals and awards.
The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Games marked the 50th anniversary of Stein’s first Olympic medal. Park City, where Stein has live since moving from Aspen, Co in the 1970′s, hosted numerous events including the Freestyle competitions at Deer Valley Resort where Stein served as the Director of Ski School.
Today, athletes including Park City’s own Ted Ligety descended on Time Square to mark the “100-days out from the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.” Park City will host qualifying events for the 2014 games including: The FIS Freestyle World Cup (January 8-11) aerials, moguls and dual moguls competitions at Deer Valley Resort.
